Immigrants, advocates and community leaders teamed up Tuesday in Riverhead to ask Suffolk County to help unaccompanied children who cross the border into the U.S. better adapt to life in America and on Long Island.
Advocates say 90 percent of the children reunite with parents and relatives who are already living here.
"We want the county to be supportive of these children, and help them resettle here," said Maryann Sinclair Slutsky, of the nonprofit group Long Island WINS. "We want to ensure that the county will treat them with compassion and dignity."
Advocates want the county to create a task force that includes community members and children's families.
