An East End official has been busted on federal child pornography charges.
Prosecutors say David Corwin, 72, had several computers in his house that had child porn on them. He went before a judge Wednesday afternoon in federal court.
Corwin, a member of Greenport's Zoning Board of Appeals, is now the second official within the Town of Southold facing child porn charges within the last month.
According to the complaint from the U.S. Attorney's Office, the FBI visited Corwin's home in Greenport after authorities flagged an IP address belonging to his computer which had been downloading child pornography.
Prosecutors say Corwin downloaded pictures of naked children between the ages 5 and 6, and pornographic videos showing toddlers between the ages of 1 and 3 being subjected to sexual acts.
The FBI took multiple computers from Corwin's house, and he was arrested Wednesday and charged with possession of child pornography.
During his virtual arraignment, prosecutors said Corwin went out and bought a new computer a day after the FBI took his from his house. They say he used the new computer to set up a new Instagram account under an alias.
Authorities say Instagram is one of the ways Corwin was getting child porn.
A judge set bail for Corwin at $300,000. In court, Corwin said he would be using his Greenport house to pay for bail.
The charges come after Damon Rallis, of Southold, was arrested and accused of possessing child porn on Feb. 23. Rallis worked for the Southold Buildings Department and was also a Boy Scout leader.
A judge says Corwin will be allowed to access the internet, but will be monitored by the court. One of the conditions of his release is that he cannot have contact with anyone under 18 years old.
