New Housing and Development grants are helping agencies take care of the homeless population on Long Island.

Ten million dollars will be divided among nearly two dozen agencies in Nassau and Suffolk counties to help the homeless. The non-profit agency Help Suffolk owns 14 houses in Brookhaven that it rents to people who were formerly homeless. Officials say the grants will allow them to buy more homes and come closer to ending homelessness in the area.

The Nassau-Suffolk Coalition for the Homeless estimates there are more than 40,000 homeless people on Long Island.
