Gov. Kathy Hochul addressed some of the problems facing Long Island in her State of the State address Wednesday.

In one part of her speech, the governor specifically mentioned potholes on the Long Island Expressway, saying they need to be fixed.

"To have the governor of the state of New York complain about the potholes on the Long Island Expressway, that resonates with the people who live in this area," says Marc Herbst, of the Long Island Contractors Association. "So that was great to hear that she's going to address that, and we're looking to do that this spring."

A major pothole repair program on the LIE from Route 110 out to Brookhaven Town is scheduled for this spring.

Herbst says there are also other infrastructure projects in the pipeline that could mean benefits for motorists and new jobs for workers.

The governor also brought up a Long Island traffic issue--the Oakdale merge, where Sunrise and Montauk highways meet.

Hochul says the spring environment reviews will begin on proposals to ease congestion there.

"That's an important first step, and I commend Gov. Hochul for making it a priority," says state Sen. Phil Boyle. "I think once we get these environment reviews done, they can get work started. What we really want to see is shovels in the ground. There's been decades of talk, it's time to act."

The governor also says that the Long Island Rail Road's Third Track project will be completed in 2022, as well as proposal aimed at protecting Long Island's underground drinking water supply.
