Aggressive new efforts are underway to support new renewable energy projects and help New York state in going green.

The move is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's State of the State agenda, with Cuomo calling it "the largest production of renewable energy of any state in United State history."

Cuomo is focusing on green and renewable energy and announced a list of environmental projects that the state wants to implement in order to combat climate change.

Environmentalist are thrilled that it includes two new wind farms off Montauk Point and Jones Beach. Together, the wind farms are expected to produce 2,500 megawatts of energy.

"That equates to another quarter-million homes that can be powered by clean, safe renewable energy," says Adrienne Esposito, of Citizens Campaign for the Environment.

Part of the strategic green initiative includes setting up training facilities at SUNY Stony Brook and Farmingdale to train the workforce needed to get the wind farms up and running.

"It's a $20 million program. We are going to be training people beginning this summer, so we will actually have about 2,500 enrolled and trained by the summer of 2021," says SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras.

The governor says the wind farms will create hundreds of jobs, which are desperately needed due to the effects of the pandemic.

Cuomo says the wind farms, which will be paid for by private and public funds, will be located 20 miles off Jones Beach and more than 60 miles off Montauk Point. He added that the wind farms will not be visible from the shore.
