Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced a measure to prevent a gas shortage in New York like the one that millions of residents experienced after Superstorm Sandy.

In a statement, the governor announced the nation's first state-based Strategic Gasoline Reserve to prevent future supply gaps during severe weather events and emergencies.

An emergency supply of about 3 million gallons of gas will be stored on Long Island.

The measure is part of the state's Fuel NY initiative.
