Thanks to a new law, one of Long Island's natural treasures will be better protected.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law the Carmans River Protection Bill.

The law extends the protection of the Pine Barrens to include the Carmans River Watershed. It also adds over 3,800 acres to the Central Pine Barrens.

Lawmakers say preserving the river will also provide protection for Long Island's groundwater.
