U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer and the White House announced Friday that more than $42 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funding has been awarded to support public safety initiatives across New Jersey.

According to Gottheimer's office, the funding includes $21 million for statewide public safety efforts, including New Jersey State Police, World Cup-related expenses and other public safety and transit measures. Another $21 million will be directed to New Jersey's 5th Congressional District to support law enforcement in Bergen, Passaic and Sussex counties, transit security and security improvements at houses of worship and religious schools.

The funding will also support security upgrades at the Andover train station in Sussex County, including additional security cameras, cybersecurity protections and physical improvements.

Gottheimer's office said the new funding comes in addition to $8.5 million previously secured for World Cup security, bringing the total federal public safety funding announced since June to more than $50 million.

"After months of negotiations and relentless advocacy, I clawed back more than $42 million home to Jersey and put it exactly where it belongs: in the hands of the brave men and women keeping our communities safe," Gottheimer said.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill said the funding will help ensure first responders have the resources they need to protect communities across the state.

The money will be distributed to the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness through several FEMA grant programs, according to Gottheimer's office.
