Gotham Avenue School in the Elmont School District honored Hispanic Heritage Month by creating a cookbook full of family recipes.
"The kids were so excited to see their name on the cookbook," says guidance counselor Paola Molina.
Kids, parents and the school staff worked together to create its first school cookbook.
"Our cookbook is called 'Sabor y Amor' which means flavor and love. So, we had our parents basically send in recipes and it's from their culture so it doesn't have to be Latino-based, it can be from wherever," says Molina.
The cookbook features food from Pakistan, Haiti, Jamaica, Colombia, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
"The great thing about Gotham is that we come from so many different cultures," says Molina.
Parents say they helped choose dishes that are special family recipes.
"It was arroz a la valenciana in Spanish. It's rice and chicken," says parent Jose Mercaeo, who made a dish from Nicaragua.
"It's a pudding but it's called kheer in our country," says parent Sundas Najum, who made a dish from Pakistan.
On Wednesday, parents, kids and teachers presented the cookbook. There was also a special performance by the kids.
Families were even able to try some of the recipes. They say it means a lot to see their dish featured and people enjoying it.
"We wanted to share with everyone here and try a little food from every country," says Mercaeo.
"When we were little, my mom used to make it," says Najum.
