The city of Glen Cove marked its 25th Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration Monday, as it honored the civil rights advocate and his legacy.
Residents marched through the streets singing songs of the civil rights movement and then attended an event hosted by Finley Middle School. The celebration was organized by Sheryl Goodine, whose father, James Davis, marched with Dr. King several times.
?I know my dad is looking down from heaven with Dr. King in appreciation of this beautiful day,? Goodine says.
Many in attendance expressed their excitement for Monday?s celebration as a preview to Tuesday?s inauguration of America?s first black president, Barack Obama.
?It seems like the word change is buzzing through this auditorium,? Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi says. ?The country is changing, just as we all are. Our country has been growing and learning. Now it's ready for change.?
