Police say a Garden City woman took on a would-be thief on Friday.

Prosecutors say the 55-year-old woman returned to her Pell Terrace home and found an unknown vehicle in her driveway. When she walked into her house, she says she saw 50-year-old Robert Washington, of Queens, walking out of her bedroom with a pillowcase full of her jewelry.

Police say that when she approached Washington, he threatened to shoot her, although the victim didn't see a weapon. Washington then fled with the stolen items.

Investigators say physical evidence was recovered at the scene that helped them trace Washington to a Queens hotel. The suspect was found with a bag of marijuana when he was arrested, but police say the stolen jewelry has not yet been recovered.

Washington was arraigned today on charges of burglary, grand larceny, robbery and marijuana possession in a Hempstead court room. He is expected back in court on Nov. 6.
