It was standing-room only at a meeting in Westbury last night as residents demanded answers about plans to put a gaming parlor at the old Fortunoff site on Old Country Road.

The emotionally-charged crowd inside the gymnasium at St. Brigid's school thanked political and civic leaders who oppose the Nassau OTB plan to build a gambling venue. For opponents, it boils down to two major concerns for the area's future - traffic and crime.

A representative from the Nassau OTB addressed the concerns of the hostile audience. Earlier, Nassau OTB gaming advisor Rich Baldwin told News 12 that security and surveillance will be tight at the gambling facility, and traffic concerns will be addressed.

Political leaders at the meeting told News 12 that they oppose the project, but are frustrated that it does not fall under local jurisdiction. That fact has led Democrats in the Legislature to call for the Republican majority to replace the Nassau OTB's board members with new representatives who would oppose the project.

At a press conference Thursday, state Sen. Jack Martins, of Mineola, suggested that the Nassau Coliseum site in the Town of Hempstead might be a better fit for the gaming facility.
