A sea of firefighters and police officers stood in silence outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan Tuesday to pay tribute to fallen FDNY firefighter Michael Davidson.

Fire officials say Davidson, a 15-year veteran of the FDNY and a married father of four, was on the front line of a five-alarm fire, which broke out in the basement of a Harlem building on Friday.

They say Davidson, of Floral Park, became separated from the group, and was found unconscious from severe smoke inhalation. He was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

The 37-year-old was remembered for his bravery and also as a leader in his firehouse.

“He demonstrated the unwavering dedication to duty that would make both senior members of his fire house and his officers stand up and take notice,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

"If the New York City Fire Department had an action hero, it was Michael Davidson. He is the epitome of the strong silent type, yet somehow, you can talk to him about anything,” said his cousin John Hession during the service. “I am two years older than Michael, but I looked up to him."

The department posthumously promoted Davidson to lieutenant. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and their four young children -- ages 7,6,3 and 1.
