The fundraiser for the Riverhead High School volleyball team that was giving away a gun has been canceled.
The owner of JJ Armory posted online that he was instructed to call off the sweepstakes.
The giveaway, which was initially called a raffle, drew mixed reactions from parents.
The district said it would never sanction such a fundraiser.
The state Gaming Commission later said the gun shop wasn't legally allowed to raffle off the weapon.
The owner says he is refunding all participants, but says he's still collecting donations for the team.
