A fugitive was found at the Sag Harbor Inn earlier this month after allegedly killing his wife in Colorado, police say.
William Cruz pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder Thursday after his arrest at the Hamptons hotel.
Family and friends of Masany Cruz started a GoFundMe after police say the 29-year-old woman was reported missing by someone in New Jersey on Oct. 4. They say the caller believed Masany Cruz could be at the Sag Harbor Inn.
Police responded to the Sag Harbor Inn at the same time police in Colorado went to the couple’s last known address.
Investigators found Masany Cruz’s body at the Colorado home and police found her husband, William Cruz, alone at the Sag Harbor Inn.
According to court documents, William Cruz was taken into custody and brought to Brunswick Psychiatric Hospital in Amityville for treatment. Police did not say what he was being treated for.
Investigators say Masany Cruz was last heard from on Sept. 14. They believe her husband fled Colorado on Sept. 15 and arrived on Long Island three days later.
A statement from Masany Cruz’s family says in part: “…he pretended to be her and texted all her family and friends like nothing happened. Masany was trying to get out of a situation that she had no escape from with multiple domestic violence reports. We are devastated and heartbroken that someone would do something so cruel to a loving mother, daughter and sister.”
The coroner ruled Masany Cruz’s death a homicide, but police have not said how exactly she was killed.
Some in Sag Harbor were shocked by the news.
“This is our own little paradise so it’s unreal, surreal,” one person says. “But it’s a tragedy that someone was killed that someone’s life was taken. It’s like a movie.”
Management at the Sag Harbor Inn would not comment on the incident but say they don't remember seeing William Cruz there.
