A man is walking from Montauk to New York City to honor his late wife who died from cancer.
Paul Gruol, of Farmingdale, wrapped up the fifth day of a 130-mile journey on Thursday, where he spoke with News 12 in Eastport.
“Be the gift of hope for somebody else because your gift today will help someone in the future,” he said. “We're fighting for the future of cancer patients and cancer survivors.”
Gruol is raising money for the American Cancer Society. His wife, Maria, died in 2008 after her battle with breast cancer – which lasted more than a decade.
He is stopping outside three hospitals on his way to the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Manhattan to say thank you to the medical staff who care for cancer patients.
In his backpack are pink bandanas that have been signed by breast cancer survivors and caregivers, as well as photos of Maria and their daughters.
Gruol hopes to raise $10,000 during his “Honor Walk.” His plan is to visit the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Manhattan at the end of his walk on Oct. 2
