A memorial is being held for John Miro, a Nassau County crossing guard who died while working to keep others safe.

Miro was struck by a driver who was allegedly high on drugs. It happened around 8 a.m. on Feb. 26.

Miro was in critical condition for days before succumbing to his injuries, police said.

Fellow crossing guard Donna Partland described Miro as a "sweetheart" and a "staple of the community."

"He loved doing what he was doing. He loved it. He really did," Partland told News 12.

Joshua Alvarado is facing upgraded charges in the crash, police said. He's charged with manslaughter in the second degree and assault in the second degree.

Miro's wake is scheduled for Wednesday. His funeral will be held on Thursday.
