Friends are coping Sunday with the loss of a 65-year-old sailor who died Saturday on the Great South Bay when his sailboat capsized.
John Everitt and his wife, Virginia, both of Bellport, were sailing in a Fourth of July regatta when John Everitt suffered a heart attack, his sons say.
Friends say Everitt was president of the sailing foundation in Bellport, which teaches children and adults how to sail. Everitt also was elected as a village trustee three weeks ago.
