A Smithtown teen who died in a car crash Friday has been laid to rest.
Police say Atkin Altinerlielmas, 19, was driving over 90 miles per hour when he lost control of his car on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset. His passengers, two of his close friends, survived but were seriously injured.
Oceanside High School students took action on Saturday to prevent future accidents from happening. The students painted safe driving messages, such as ?Don?t text and drive? and ?Speeding isn?t cool,? on the yellow lines in the school?s parking lots.
?People text when driving, they talk to friends,? Christine Schindler, the president of Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) said.
The students also painted the number 16 in the parking lots, because an Allstate Insurance statistic shows that 16 teens die everyday nationwide from car crashes. At least 10 teens have been killed on Long Island by car crashes this year.
?We?re trying to get people and hope that if they?re aware they?ll tell their friends ? so that things that happened in Syosset won?t happen here,? Nicole Nagler, a member of SADD, said.
Oceanside students are also asking classmates to sign a pledge promising to be responsible and not distract a friend while driving.
