A worker at a Freeport laundry facility found a dead fetus wrapped in a hospital blanket Wednesday morning while sorting through laundry, police say.
Authorities say the fetus, a boy, was discovered around 8:30 a.m. at Oceanside Institutional Industries. Officials estimate he was between 17 and 20 weeks old, weighing around 6 ounces. The manager at Oceanside Institutional Industries said the company followed procedure and called the police.
The blanket the fetus was wrapped in had the name of a Brooklyn hospital on it ? SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Detectives say the baby was born inside the hospital. They say it appeared someone cleaned him up after he was born and clamped his umbilical cord as well.
Authorities believe the baby was either miscarried or stillborn.
?We?re exploring all avenues,? Det. Sgt. Keechant Swell of the Nassau County police said. ?It appears that someone may not have sought the proper medical treatment. The baby was probably stillborn and the person may not have realized all the avenues, options available to them.?
However, authorities still do not know why or how the fetus ended up at the Freeport laundry facility. They are looking for the baby?s mother and they say she is not facing any criminal charges. A spokesperson for SUNY Downstate says the hospital is cooperating with police.
Police are asking anyone with any information to call the Nassau County CrimeStoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
