Freeport volunteer firefighter named 'Firefighter of the Year'

11h agoLt. Petros Mestheneas, of Truck Company 1 in Freeport, was recognized by the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) for his bravery and quick actions in a commercial fire in April 2023.
Mestheneas rushed into a building to save the lives of two firefighters who were trapped inside the structure.
He was able to locate the firefighters and guide them safely out of the burning building.
"It's an honor. I am humbled and I am grateful. This is a great honor that they gave me," says Mestheneas.
The two rescued firefighters suffered smoke inhalation.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
Mestheneas, a volunteer firefighter of 36 years is also scheduled to be receive the National Firefighter of the Year Award in November in South Carolina.
