A Freeport stunt pilot practicing for an air show in Virginia lost his life when his plane crashed Friday.
Jan Wildbergh was flying in a training exercise with the Geico Skywriters Air Show team that he flew with. Wildbergh had joined the group in 1986.
The pilot was operating a World War II-style stunt plane. When performing at shows, the Skytypers use smoke to type messages in the sky while doing low-level flying maneuvers.
Officials say it is too early to determine what caused the crash, but an investigation into the incident is underway.
Wildbergh is survived by his widow, two children and six grandchildren.
