Former Suffolk County Legislator Wayne Prospect was back in court Monday to face new charges of tax evasion.
Prospect already faces 5 to 15 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of bribery and coercion in May. The district attorney?s office argued Prospect took money from contractors in exchange for information on county projects. Now he is accused of not paying state income tax on money he received from the county for a consultant job.
Defense attorney Chris Cassar says the charges are baseless and an attempt to get Prospect to drop his appeal on the bribery conviction. Prospect will be sentenced on August 3. He is due back in court in September on the tax fraud charge.
