The Riverhead school board voted four to three Tuesday night to accept former Riverhead High School principal Charles Regan's resignation.
Regan is accused of sexually abusing a student. News 12 Long Island has learned that Charles Regan is resigning effective Sept. 27.

Regan was accused of sexual abuse in April by a female high school student, whose attorney said that Regan sent 18-year-old Anastasia Stapon, thousands of explicit text messages in April and proceeded to sexually assault her in his office.

The student has since brought a federal lawsuit against Regan and the Riverhead district.

Regan had been on administrative leave in connection to the accusations against him.

District officials are also asking the state to terminate Regan's teaching and administrative licenses.
