A former prosecutor from New Rochelle is joining the crowded race for Westchester County district attorney.

In his first interview as an official candidate, Adeel Mirza told News 12's Tara Rosenblum that his decades of legal experience make him a well-qualified candidate for the job.

Mirza worked in the D.A.'s office for 18 years, focusing on gang and gun violence cases and became a "branch chief."

Most recently he's been a criminal attorney, taking on pro bono cases.

"I am a career prosecutor in the office I seek to lead," Mirza said. "I know that office and the strengths and weaknesses of that office and I think I can use that experience and my knowledge in order to improve the criminal justice system for the people of Westchester."

Mirza will launch his campaign on Monday, joining three other Democrats who either announced their candidacies or plan to soon.

This week, Democrat David Szuchman suspended his campaign.

As of now, no Republicans have joined the race.
