A former Babylon teacher and coach was arraigned Friday on charges of rape and a criminal sex act for an alleged sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student in 2013.
Timothy Harrison is accused of having a sex with a 15-year-old Babylon High School student.
Police say a woman told authorities in November 2021 that she had a sexual relationship with Harrison in 2013 when she was 15 years old and he was 38 years old.
"A teacher, Timothy Harrison, then 38, who was also assistant girls lacrosse and basketball coach at Babylon High School, engaged in sexual relationships with her," said Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison.
The police commissioner says the victim indicated that the rape occurred off school grounds, but that there was inappropriate contact that took place at the school.
Police say Harrison, now 46, of Oak Beach, was arrested on the Robert Moses Causeway in West Islip.
The full extent of Harrison's alleged actions was revealed during his arraignment.
According to the prosecutor, Harrison was texting with the female student, allegedly picked her up, took her to his house in Oak Beach, gave her alcohol, performed oral sex on her and then had sexual intercourse with her.
The prosecutor says there was also a second incident when Harrison allegedly took the victim to his house and had intercourse with her again.
Harrison's lawyer Kevin Keating told the judge that his client is an upstanding citizen who has been married for 17 years and has two teenage children.
"We have the presumption of innocence," Keating says.
The judge said the allegations are clearly troubling and Harrison allegedly violated the trust of the community.
The arrest follows mounting allegations of wrongdoing in the school district.
Former student Brittany Rohl is among the accusers who says her abuser was one of Harrison's colleagues.
"I met him when I switched away from Tim Harrison's lacrosse program and into the track program. And he told me I was special, all the things that we now know are grooming," Rohl said.
Following Harrison's arrest, Babylon School District Superintendent Linda J. Rozzi responded in part, "These allegations are extremely disturbing, and our thoughts are with the victim. The District and Board of Education have zero tolerance towards such heinous acts and take all claims of this nature very seriously."
School officials say Harrison is still employed by the school district, but he is suspended with pay.
The prosecutor says additional charges are being considered against Harrison.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim is asked to call detectives at 631-852-8791.
