(04/05/06) MANORVILLE ? Significant strides in the medical community have helped Long Island parents get a better understanding of autism and the way it affects children.
The Zweroff family of Manorville is dealing with autism in an up-close and personal manner. All three of the Zweroff children are on what is known as the autism spectrum. Their parents understand that autism affects each child in a different manner.
According to medical experts, early diagnosis is key in helping a child cope with the disorder. Medical experts say approximately 2,600 children on Long Island are on the autism spectrum. Research has shown that 90 percent of autism is related to genetics. It is not known if any other factors, such as the environment, are involved.
