A controversial mailer endorsing Jack Martins for Nassau County executive states that Democratic candidate Laura Curran is "MS-13's choice for county executive. She shouldn't be yours."
"I find it incredibly offensive," Curran told News 12 Long Island. "I don't even know what to say. I just find it vile."
The flyer was paid for by the New York State Republican Committee. On one side is an endorsement for Jack Martins for county executive. On the other is a picture of three men covered in tattoos with a message on top that reads "meet your new neighbors."
Martins says he agrees with the flyers. He claims the Curran campaign is endorsed by groups who support so-called sanctuary cities and illegal immigration.
"We're not going to play political correctness and take a back seat when it comes to protecting our communities. [Curran] may want to do that, but this isn't about political correctness. This is about public safety," Martins told News 12
Curran says the message Martins is spreading is irresponsible and desperate.
"I do not think Nassau County should be a sanctuary county. I think that our police need to be able to work with their federal partners to do the right kind of investigation and the right kind of enforcement," she said.
Both Martins and Curran agree on one thing: Whoever ends up as county executive will have to make gang violence a top priority.
News 12 reached out to the New York State Republican Committee for a response but hasn't heard back.
