A state-of-the-art system is set to be installed in Freeport to protect thousands of homes and streets in the village from flooding.
According to Freeport Village Mayor Robert Kennedy, flooding from high tides, lunar cycles and heavy rains total millions in damages each year.
Kennedy, also a mechanical engineer, helped design the new system to help quell flooding in the community. It involves a series of pumps, check valves and controls while also preventing water from the bay from entering into the streets via storm drain outlets.
Part of the system has already been installed and some residents say they see an improvement.
The mayor says another six to 12 valves will be installed. The village will be using an $800,000 grant from the state to expand catch basins and install pumps.
