It appears the bite of fleas, not dogs, has kept mail carriers away from a Massapequa apartment complex.
Larry Rosenzweig, who lives at the Southpoint Apartment Complex on Carole Court, says he hasn't received his mail at his door for three months because of the infestation.
"They claim there are fleas biting the carriers or something," Rosenzweig says.
Instead, the U.S. Postal Service has delivered the 29 residents' mail to the leasing office. The USPS says it is working with the management company and the Nassau County Department of Health to find a resolution.
The Health Department, meanwhile, says the fleas are the result of a feral cat problem in the immediate area. The management company has exterminated several times and was given the names of trap, neuter and release programs, the Health Department says.
In a statement to News 12 Long Island, the management company says the complex is now pest-free, a claim the Health Department says it will check out. The management company also says in the statement it will now hand-deliver mail to affected residents.
