Flags are flying at half-staff across Nassau County today in honor of a young NYPD officer from Massapequa shot in the line of duty this past weekend.
Officer Brian Moore, 25, died Monay after being shot in the head Saturday in Queens Village.
Over 1,000 people filled the football field at Plainedge High School last night to remember Moore. Moore lived in Massapequa all his life, and community members came out to show their support for his family.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton called Officer Moore an exceptional young officer who'd made over 150 arrests in less than five years.
Moore's dad is a retired NYPD officer, and his uncle and cousins are police officers in the area as well.
President Obama also spoke about Officer Moore. "He came from a family of police officers. And the family of fellow officers he joined in the NYPD and across the country deserve our gratitude and our prayers, not just today but every day. They've got a tough job," Obama said.
Moore's death has left friends, neighbors and fellow cops stunned and heartbroken.
Moore's wake is Thursday at Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in Bethpage from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Seaford.
