? Work on the LIRR signal system will likely frustrate some commuters who are planning to ride the rails this weekend.
The LIRR is finishing an upgrade to its signal system in Queens, meaning there will be no service on the main lines between Jamaica and Mineola and Jamaica and Hempstead. The repairs are part of a $60 million program to modernize the track, reduce signal delays and give passengers a smoother ride.
Buses between Mineola and Jamaica will run from 12:40 Saturday morning until 12:40 Monday morning. Railroad officials are telling riders to expect to add between 11 and 45 minutes onto their trips.
Though the LIRR has been trying to get the word out about the changes, many commuters say they hadn?t heard about it. Customer assistants will be on hand throughout the weekend to help with the changes.
