A Riverhead firefighter was arraigned Sunday for allegedly taking out a utility pole while driving drunk in a fire truck.
Capt. Robert Block is charged with DWI and endangering the welfare of a child. Block was arrested Saturday after he allegedly crashed into the pole while driving back from the Village of Greenport parade.
Authorities said his 8-year-old son and another firefighter, who was injured in the crash, were also in the truck.
As LIPA crews replaced the pole Sunday, the Riverhead Fire Department took a lot of heat. "We notified the police department," said Bill Kelly, of the Board of Fire Commissioners. "And we've been doing our own internal investigation. It puts a black eye on every member of this department."
The fireman of 10 years has been suspended. A woman at Block's residence defended him before asking a News 12 Long Island crew to leave the property.
