Police say an 80-year-old woman died in a house fire in Seaford early Tuesday.
Officers responded to the fire located at 2464 Riverside Ave. around 6:15 a.m.
Before they arrived, a neighbor saw the flames and quickly reacted.
James Mooney tells News 12 he was on his way to work when he saw the house on fire and rushed to help.
He says he grabbed a golf club from his car and smashed the glass on the front door. On the first floor, he found a woman sleeping and got her safely out of the home.
"She was hysterical. Her mother was upstairs. I attempted to get upstairs, and I got to the landing and that's when the flames ripped through the hallway over my head," Mooney said. "It was too late - the whole upstairs was engulfed in flames."
The Seaford Fire Department along with the Wantagh, Bellmore and Massapequa fire departments, responded and extinguished the flames.
Approximately 70 firefighters were on scene. Officials say one Wantagh firefighter sustained a burn injury and was transported to the hospital for treatment. He has since been released.
The 80-year-old female was pronounced dead on scene. The 60-year-old daughter of the deceased suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Mooney says he wishes he had left his home a little bit earlier.
"My heart sank for the woman who did not make it," Mooney said.
The identities of the women have not been released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
