The combination of 25-plus mph gusts, very low humidity and dry ground will continue to keep the risk of brush fires and explosive fire growth high. That is why the fire weather warning has been extended through 6 p.m. Saturday.
A rare wildfire has grown quickly on the other side of the Hudson River in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and sent some smoke smell across parts of New York City. There are also some areas of brush even in the city to be extra careful around. Avoid open flames and cigarette buds if possible. Any fires that do spark, weather-related or not, will be much harder to contain and extinguish.
It will also be much cooler this weekend, back to typical November weather, something New Yorkers have not been used to so far this fall. Highs will only reach the mid-50s Saturday, and upper-50s Sunday. Lows at night will dip down close to 40 degrees. Jackets will be needed, especially at night.
The fire risk will be diminished by some on Sunday with lighter wind and cloudy conditions. It will still be bone dry through midday. A cold front will bring the chance for the first meaningful rainfall in 40 days after 6 p.m. Sunday evening. The timing of light to steady showers is after 6 p.m. Sunday through 3 a.m. Monday. After the rain clears Monday morning, it turns cooler again into midweek next week. Another, much more significant storm, is potentially looming for Thursday. Details remain limited at this time so stay tuned with the Storm Watch Team for updates.
