A small plane crashed Sunday afternoon in Old Bethpage.

According to the FAA, the twin-engine Cessna C421 crashed by the former Old Bethpage waste disposal complex near the Nassau Fire Academy. It happened shortly after 1 p.m.

Officials say the pilot was a 57-year-old man from Bellmore who took off from Republic Airport in Farmingdale and was flying overhead when he reported he was having engine troubles.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino says then the plane's second engine failed too, and it crash landed - coming to a stop on a fence.

Saladino says the pilot had been heading to Connecticut and he tried to turn around to go back to Farmingdale when he ran into trouble.

Officials say the man was taken to Nassau University Medical Center and is in stable condition. He was able to talk to first responders at the scene.

They say an on-duty highway patrol officer who saw the plane go down was the first on the scene and helped the man out of the plane.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino says the FAA will be taking over the investigation. No other injuries were reported.
