The Harvest Diner, a staple for 40 years on Old Country Road in Westbury, was destroyed by a fire this morning.
The fire began just after 5 a.m. – one hour before the diner was slated to open. There was nobody inside the diner at the time, and no injuries were reported.
The fire marshal told News 12 that it appeared that the fire was accidental and began in the kitchen.
Officials say 12 departments responded to help extinguish the fire.
Co-owner Charlie Savva was at the scene and said he was most concerned about his workers’ future.
"Forty years went down the drain,” says Savva, who was at the scene. “I have no words to say.”
According to co-owner Lucille Savva, the Harvest Diner has every intention of rebuilding. She had a message for her loyal employees and customers in the meantime:
"We love you. We appreciate you and all your dedication to the diner over the years,” she said. “Don't lose hope or faith."
