Ferocious winds brought by a clipper storm lashed Long Island on Sunday, knocking down trees and power lines across Nassau and Suffolk.

Thousands of Long Islanders lost power throughout the day. At its peak, PSEG reported more than 18,900 outages. Efforts to restore power were hampered as the winds refused to let up, preventing the use of bucket trucks in some cases.

Photos sent in to News 12 by viewers showed tree limbs that had crushed cars, massive trees that tipped over and blocked streets, flyaway trampolines and other wind-related damage.

In Uniondale, firefighters responded when a party tent was carried across Davis Street and got caught on a fence. The fire chief said all departments were on alert due to the conditions.

On Cove Road in Oyster Bay Cove, a gigantic tree tipped into the street and uprooted the sidewalk.

A high-wind warning had been issued for Long Island Sunday amid gusts of 40-60 mph. That warning has now expired, but a freeze warning is in effect overnight due to the cold temperatures in the upper-20s and low-30s.
