A new effort to reduce the East End deer population starts today.
The Village of East Hampton will begin sterilizing 140 female deer.
Over the next three weeks, biologists and veterinarians will capture the deer and perform a 12-minute surgery to remove their ovaries. Each procedure costs $1,000.
East Hampton allocated $30,000 for the project and another $110,000 was raised in donations.
