One Long Island community battered by Superstorm Sandy is getting some much needed financial help.

Long Beach has won an appeal that will force FEMA to pay the construction costs for the city's boardwalk.

The $9 million boardwalk, which features sustainable hardwood and a retaining wall to protect it from waves, was built after Superstorm Sandy damaged the city's old boardwalk. Construction was completed in October 2013.

"Our city council has really been persistent and proven that if you keep fighting, you can win these fights," said City Manager Jack Schnirman.

Schnirman said the new boardwalk is "stronger, smarter and safer" than its predecessor.
