Suffolk police joined federal law enforcement agencies in raiding a Brookhaven home Thursday that allegedly contained pipe bombs and rifles.
U.S. Marshals, ATF agents and Suffolk Police Department officers discovered the weapons at the Montauk Highway home of 22-year-old Jason Gerhard, officials said. Gerhard recently enlisted in the U.S. Army and was arrested at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri on Wednesday, U.S. Marshals said.
A federal indictment charged Gerhard and three other men with helping obstruct justice in the case of two convicted tax evaders from New Hampshire, Ed and Elaine Brown. The Browns, who claim the federal income tax is not legitimate, were convicted in January of hiding $1.9 million of income between 1996 and 2003.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
