The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) says the Broadwater barge will have no significant environmental impact in or around the Long Island Sound, according to its final report.
The report, released Friday, includes 86 recommendations the commission says would lessen any harm to the surrounding water.
The planned floating natural gas terminal will reside nine miles off the North Shore, and some residents say that?s too close. Despite the new report, they say the barge will destroy their quality of life and damage marine life.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer says he will not comment on the report until the secretary of state?s office releases its own fact-finding results.
Broadwater Energy Senior Vice President John Hritcko says the final environmental impact statement is a significant step for the company. ?Long Islanders are one step closer to having safe, clean, affordable natural gas delivered right to their door,? he claimed in a statement.
