Long Island homeowners thinking about making their homes more energy efficient have until the end of year to cash in thousands of dollars in federal tax rebates. "A lot of people aren't aware that it's even available, and a lot of our clients actually that we met with earlier in the year understand that this tax credit is expiring," said Patrick O'Brien, with T.F. O'Brien Heating and Cooling. Originally set to expire in 2032, the new budget bill now ends them this year.
That’s why T.F. O’Brien says they are seeing a rush in install requests. "Thoughts that they might have had towards 2026 now they're reaching back out to us and saying, 'Hey I want to take advantage of the tax credits,'" said O'Brien. The expiring rebates include up to $2,000 for installing qualifying central air systems and split AC units for your wall. Also ending, up to $1,200 in tax credit if you make other energy efficiency upgrades to your home, including installing doors and windows that meet Energy Star requirements.
One of the largest tax incentives going away is for buying solar panels, which is up to 30% of the total installation costs.
