An FDNY firefighter who was severely burned on the job met some of the people who donated blood to save his life.
Firefighter Robert Wiedmann thanked the nine blood donors who stepped up after he suffered third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body. He was injured after responding to a 2012 fire at a brownstone in Brooklyn.
Doctors gave the Islip Terrace native only a 40 percent chance of survival.
That's when strangers from as far away as Boston helped with the battle to save Wiedmann's life. They rolled up their shirt sleeves to donate blood for the numerous surgeries Wiedmann had to undergo. Wiedmann says he can't thank them enough.
Wiedmann says he still has to undergo several more surgeries but he's well on his way to making a full recovery.
