Joseph Norris, 38 of Babylon, has been accused of driving on the wrong side of the Sunken Meadow State Parkway and hitting a vehicle driven by Anthony Mariano, killing him.
News 12 learned Tuesday that Norris has been a New York City firefighter for 14 years. He had been working at Ladder 107 in Brooklyn.
The FDNY confirmed Norris remains hospitalized and faces suspension pending the outcome of the criminal case. According to court records, Norris was issued a desk appearance ticket and will be arraigned on the DWI charge Dec. 16.
The Suffolk District Attorney's Office wouldn't say what Norris' blood alcohol content was at the time of the crash. They would not release that information before the arraignment.
News 12 spoke to Christine Azzolini, Mariano's fiancée last week. On Tuesday, she told us she is overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support following the crash. Mariano was a popular teacher at a Queens high school - and the two were to be married next year.
