Suffolk officials met this week with the FBI in Melville as part of the Gilgo Beach murders investigation.
FBI agents will be specifically assigned to the case. Suffolk police said they will provide technical assistance, but wouldn't give more specifics.
The FBI will also provide a behavioral science team to work up a full profile of the killer or killers.
Dr. Harvey Kushner, director of the Homeland Security and Terrorism Institute at LIU, told News 12 Long Island that the FBI joining is a good move.
"They have resources that local police departments don't have," said Kushner.
John Ray, attorney for Shannon Gilbert's family, said the family is happy the FBI has come in.
"It's the only way to break through the plastic cast that's been put over this case by the Suffolk County police," said Ray.
