The TYR Sport headquarters in Farmingdale is a nondescript tan building with a glass entrance in the middle of an office park complex.

But as TYR's director of merchandising Rachel Ripley says, what happens inside the headquarters is "pretty crazy."

That's because TYR Sports designs and makes all of the USA swimming warm-up gear worn on the pool deck in Paris.

It also makes the swimsuits worn by 12 American Olympians this year, including world record holder Katie Ledecky.

"It's really one of the pinnacles of products that you can work on," said Ripley as she showed News 12's Kevin Maher all of this year's TYR Olympic merchandise.

That includes down parkas used to keep swimmers warm, gym clothes worn in the Olympic Village and swimsuits used to set records.

Ripley is a former college swimmer and says the swimsuits can take up to two years to make.

The process involves input from the athletes wearing them and some of the best fabric and thread from Italy.

Ripley said the finished products are some of the most high-tech swimsuits in the world.

"It has a frictionless yarn in it, which then gives you glide through the water, so if you were to pour water over the suit before you get it, the water would just be bubbles trickling off the suit," she explained.

There's also technology inside the suits that you can't see, like pieces of compression tape that squeeze a swimmer's muscles to increase performance.

The Farmingdale headquarters also has a mini pool where early testing of the suits can be done.

"We have to make sure we are building the best product for them," said Ripley.

She said she gets joy watching the games on TV and seeing the TYR logo displayed so prominently.

TYR Sports also makes all of the suits for the USA diving team and special weightlifting sneakers.

It is a product made on Long Island and it's making Olympic dreams come true.
