Joanna Bird?s family continues to speak out about their loved one?s death, this time saying they have the photographs to prove the young mother?s death could have been prevented.
Bird was allegedly stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend Leonardo Valdez-Cruz on March 19. Her family blames law enforcement for the death. Bird had an order of protection out against Valdez-Cruz and the family says he should have been arrested for violating it in the days leading up to Bird?s death.
At a press conference Friday, Bird?s mother Sharon Dorsett and the family?s attorney Fred Brewington presented photos of bruises they say the woman sustained at the hands of her killer months before her death. They say Valdez-Cruz beat Bird back in January, when he allegedly tried to kidnap her and put her in the trunk of his car.
He was arrested for that incident, but the case was never pursued and he was later released. The Nassau County District Attorney?s Office says Bird refused to cooperate in the case, so there was nothing more they could do.
Brewington disputes that claim. However, he says even if Joanna didn't cooperate, the injuries and the medical report should have been enough for prosecution.
?If they would have kept him, my sister would still be here today, living, breathing and taking care of her children,? Bird?s sister Sharon says.
The Nassau District Attorney's Office would not comment. Valdez-Cruz is expected to be indicted for Bird?s murder next week.
