President Joe Biden announced new regulations meant to crack down on "ghost guns" on Monday.
The weapons are often built from kits that don't have serial numbers, making them untraceable.
Dix Hills resident Linda Beigel Schulman was at the White House Rose Garden for Biden's announcement.
Schulman has been fighting for gun safety since her son, Scott, was killed in the Parkland, Florida school shooting four years ago.
She says the president promised to take action on ghost guns when she met with him in February.
"He said to me, 'You know what Linda, we will get this done,'" Schulman says. "He said, 'You continue to fight for it and he said we will get this done.'"
Under Biden's new rules, the weapons, which are assembled from kits with 3D printers will need to have serial numbers.
Anybody buying them will also have to submit to a background check.
Law enforcement officials say the homemade guns are being used in more crimes lately, including a shooting outside a Bronx high school Friday that killed a 16-year-old girl.
Andrew Chernoff, owner of Coliseum Gun Traders in Uniondale, hopes the new restrictions will save lives but is skeptical about whether they will get all of the ghost guns off the street.
"This still doesn't stop somebody from 3D print something," Chernoff says. "I would like to think this is the right direction. It remains to be seen."
Schulman says nothing is going to work 100% overnight, but it's a start.
Under the regulations, there will be a process by which some ghost guns that are currently in circulation will be given serial numbers. That will likely require the gun owner to step forward and bring the weapon to a gun shop to be marked.
