The family of an 11-year-old fatally shot in 2022 spoke to News 12 as the two men accused of killing her accepted a plea deal that has them serving a minimum of 10 years.
“It still don’t bring Kyhara back. Nothing is going to bring her back - 10, 15, 20 or a lifetime, nothing is going to bring her back," said Yahisha Gomez, Kyhara's mother.
In May 2022, 11-year-old Kyhara Tay was on her way home when she was shot in the stomach by 15-year-old Matthew Godwin. Police say Godwin and 18-year-old Omar Bojang were driving a moped around Longwood chasing after a 13-year-old boy when Godwin fired the gun.
He missed the boy and hit Tay, fatally wounding her.
“She was not a street girl, she was not a gang member. She was Kyhara Tay. She was ours, and she was special to us," said Gomez.
Both Godwin and Bojang are set to be sentenced April 23.
